Yesterday was the day when Sean had his man's baby shower! His workplace gathered together with a ton of staff and had a surprise shower for him, with cake and presents. I have a sneaky suspicion we know exactly who did the shopping because the gifts were wonderful (thanks Kathryn!). The card was signed by a lot of the staff and some of the comments were really funny. It was so nice of them to do this for us. It was supposed to be a double baby shower for another of Sean's co-workers, but they had just had their baby the day before, and he missed his half of it all. I have no photos of this man-shower that occurred, but I hear there was a photo of half of the cake taken.
In other news, Doris (mom-in-law, aka Grandma Newark) has offered to come down and take care of me and the dogs while I am swollen and basically moving poorly. What a sweet offer! I declined saying that really I need to keep moving around between rest periods or my hips will seize up altogether. With the horrible blizzard currently bombarding us (again), the snow is piling up (again) and I worry that we'll end up having Calvin and no one will meet him for weeks and weeks cause the roads are so bad (still). Better safe than sorry at this point.
Today's OB appointment went well, with a twist. Good news is the Strep B test is negative, so assuming all goes well with the labour I don't have to be hooked up to an IV (much to my great, great relief). Twist is that he has been moving less lately and I asked about it. Note to self: don't ask about stuff. Due to the less movement thing, doc ordered a non-stress test while I was there and an ultrasound for tomorrow, just to check on things. Luckily for me, Calvin does not like the monitors (he always moves during the doppler too) so we got a lot of good movement in a short period of time :) It also monitors uterine activity and I saw some blips on the radar, which I'm guessing were small contractions that I just didn't feel. I am of the belief that that means things are opening up slowly and non-painfully and will lead to a quick and nearly pain-free labour!
Hopefully the ultrasound shows the proper level of amniotic fluid, good size baby, his bones and head all in proper proportions, etc. and then we are back to normal pee-in-a-cup type visits for the last two weeks. I have two more appointments pre-booked, which brings us up to the 40 week mark. I'm guessing that if we haven't had him by then that I should be going back for more. Funny thing is the doc will be going on vacation two days after my last already-booked appointment. Which makes me question - who will notice that I've gone overdue and harass me to show up for more appointments? I'm curious to see how this all plays out.
Just in case we get snowed in again - Sean is prepared for a home delivery against his will with him as doctor. Nice quick 'how to deliver your baby' guide is found in the What to Expect When You are Expecting book. Let's hope it doesn't come to that!
