Always the one to break away from the herd, I of course didn't want to feed him a refined product made of grain and miscellaneous other stuff (ie: infant cereal). You are told to feed them rice cereal first, then graduate to other grains, then start introducing other foods. But if you do your homework (and of course I did), you'll find out that cereals aren't required to be a first food. The reason you start a baby on solid foods is to increase iron primarily, since the mother's stores of iron become depleted around that time. There is more to it, but that counts in what you pick for your first food. Cereal makers have to add iron to the cereal. No iron in it, have to add it artificially. You just know I wouldn't stand for that! So my first thought when hearing we need to increase iron is of course to feed steak. So delicious. And apparently a perfectly acceptable first food when pureed.
I didn't pick steak as the first food in the end though. Our public health nurse recommended avocado as an excellent choice. It's got everything a human being needs in order to survive all in one product. It has a strong taste that is not a sugary treat, so baby learns to like and accept textures and tastes that aren't all fruit and sugar. Sounded good to me, so we made up some avocado in the baby bullet from Aunt Soph and had it for dinner! We are supposed to feed the same food for 3 to 5 days to watch for any signs of allergy before starting a new food, and introducing one new food at a time, each food for 3 to 5 days. I am going to aim for 4 days and see if I can wait that long before giving this baby some pureed steak. Now I want to eat steak! This has been so exciting for us - our baby is growing up so fast.
He did well with it - ate it readily at the start with his cute little mouth. It was a bit too thick I think, had bits in it still so he would frown a bit and work his tongue on it a lot, but he ate a good amount and we had fun. Can't wait to introduce new foods.
